CBD & Coffee: Your Top 5 Questions, Answered

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, over half of the adult American population are daily coffee drinkers - and it’s no surprise why millions of people incorporate this popular beverage into their morning routine. The energizing and mood-boosting effects of caffeine are extremely helpful in persevering through a long day of work or errands. And, interestingly enough, coffee may also help protect from diseases involving the liver and cardiovascular system. Crazy, right?

With many people turning to cannabidiol (CBD) as a natural remedy for therapeutic relief and internal balance, some have gotten creative with their routines. The recent rise of CBD has sparked a growing trend that also involves America’s favorite drink. Today, we’re here to answer the questions everyone’s been asking about CBD-infused coffee.

Why do people mix coffee and CBD?

Anxiety, headaches, and insomnia are some of the most common and bothersome consequences of too much caffeine. If you’re among the millions of coffee lovers you’ve probably experienced some negative side effects of drinking one too many cups o’ Joe. You may be in luck, though! The popular trend of mixing CBD oil and coffee has emerged as a way to experience the positive effects of caffeine without the unwanted downsides. CBD’s interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system has been found to alleviate nausea, anxiety, sleep problems, and other negative effects associated with coffee.

Will CBD make coffee less effective, or vice versa?

Coffee’s stimulating effects are quite different from the typical calming nature of CBD, so what’s the point of mixing the two? Research hasn’t fully determined the extent to which CBD and coffee interact with each other, but the general understanding is that they won’t cancel each other out. However, it's always important to keep track of how your CBD (and caffeine!) is making you feel so you can determine the proportions optimal for your body.

I like my coffee piping hot. Is that okay?

CBD can break down and lose its effectiveness when exposed to heat at high levels (usually around 340 degrees Fahrenheit). Luckily, your barista won’t prepare your coffee nearly this hot (or else you’d have a lot more to worry about than the effectiveness of your CBD!). Although your coffee likely won’t be hot enough to cause any damage, you may want to play it safe and let it cool down for a few minutes before adding CBD oil.

How much CBD should I put in my coffee?

Adding CBD oil to coffee doesn’t necessarily require any dosage changes. Interactions between caffeine and CBD can affect people in different ways, however, so you may want to start with a lower dose your first time combining the two. For example, if you’re used to taking 20 mg of CBD oil each morning, try adding 5-10 mg to your coffee and take the rest as you normally would.

Where can I get CBD-infused coffee?

Coffee shops that sell CBD aren’t exactly on every corner, so you likely won’t find it at your local Starbucks. For now, your best bet is probably to keep your personal CBD oil on hand so you can add it to your coffee on-the-go. Or, store some in your kitchen if you prefer your own homemade blend first thing in the morning. Adding CBD oil to coffee isn’t a complicated process. Simply add a few drops, mix it, and enjoy!

Now that you’ve learned more about mixing CBD and coffee, are you ready to give it a try? As always, make sure to speak with your physician before beginning or altering your CBD routine.
